Coalesce Cold Prep! [Important Read]

Coalesce? More like Cold-alesce. Yes, it’s f*cking cold, so be prepared. We’ll be keeping it lit with a big communal fire pit, a few barrels (bring wood please!), and propane space heaters on the dance floor, but there are also things you can do to prepare for the weather so you’re well equipped to boogie the night away.

Desert weather is unpredictable, so it’s best to come prepared for all cold situations: wind, rain—and yes—snow. Keep on reading through to the end of this blog to get our comprehensive list of tips, tricks, must-haves, and musn’t-forgets when it comes to taking on the cold at Coalesce…

FORECAST

We’ll say it again, desert weather is unpredicatable, so it’s likely that the forecast pictured will probably be different at the time Coalesce begins, so to get the most up-to-date weather click here.

What To Pack TO STAY WARM

Basically, you want to pack the warmest clothes, blankets, shoes, hats, gloves, and anything else that you own. The warmest version of everything. Popular items include…

  • Faux fur coats (make sure the coat has a proper closure like a zipper, no hooks!)

  • Big knit beanies

  • Dust masks, scarves, goggles to protect from wind

  • Hiking boots or thick Doc Martens

  • Nice wool socks (more on feet below)

  • Hand warmers!!! You can get them at any sporting goods store + we’ll have a limited supply at the HQ tent

  • Sub-zero / cold weather sleeping bag

  • Tarps - for under your tent

TIPS AND TRICKS TO BEAT THE COLD

Proper Layering

Get familiar with base layer/mid layer/outer layers. Our best advice is to invest into good synthetic or wool base layer, an insulating “puffy” mid-layer, and a thick weather-resistant outer layer for maximum warmth. For more on the subject, check out these guides by REI and Outside Online.

Keep Those Fingers & Toes Warm

Don’t even bring your vans, converse, or any other regular sneakers to the desert. Your feet will freeze and you’ll be unhappy. Pack hiking boots or other durable, thick-walled stompers. Also, don’t forget about socks! We recommend investing in a nice pair of cold weather wool socks. Layering your existing socks works too, but don’t layer too much! If your circulation is cut off in your feet, you’ll be instantly cold. Keep a nice blood flow going, dancing helps.

Maintain A Hot Top

It doesn’t matter if you have the most lusciously thick head of hair - make sure you have a nice, warm beanie or outdoor hat to keep your head and ears protected from the elements. Earmuffs are cool too if you want an extra layer of heat.

Buy Some Hand Warmers - Do It Now

The hottest desert winter item, hand warmers in your gloves are simply the best. Whether they’re the reusable/chargeable ones or the shake-and-go hand packs, make sure you stock up on hand-heaters to keep your extremities—and in turn your entire being—warm. You can get them on Amazon here.

Help Us Keep It Lit

Fire is life. Without it, we would perish in the desert. It’s important that we as a community help keep each other warm by collectively contributing firewood for the event. We recommend one bundle per person in your car. You can get wood at any hardware store or Walmart on the way out to the venue! Help us keep our fires lit and everyone warm for the weekend.

BOTTOM LINE

It’s cold in the desert during this time of year, yes, but there’s also something so magical about braving the weather with your best friends in the most beautiful setting, listening to the most innovative music, with minimal rules, and maximum fun. A little weather couldn’t stop us, don’t forget that Coalesce New Years was born in a rain storm.
